How I Turned $5 into $8500 (And You Can Too!)

I'm too destroyed from hot pilates to move from this bench, so here's a quick story about how I turned $5 into $8500.

In my opinion, one of the most underrated attributes in business, is....

Manners.

We're all obsessed with getting more business, but what about keeping the business you already have? Forget sales tactics and self-promotion, what about good old fashioned 'please' and 'thank you'?

Last November, I had a first-time engagement as an emcee for a major financial services conference in New York. It was a big deal. 250 top executives, big-name speakers, a swanky Manhattan venue.

It was my first big break in New York - I was technically still on maternity leave, and in some weird hybrid work-baby-work situation. Covered in milk one day, wearing a suit and interviewing execs about IS020022 the next.

The event went flawlessly. I got rave reviews and I was buzzing.

The next day I sent a thank-you card in the post to the organiser.

I always send a handwritten card. Why wouldn't you? Freelance work is so competitive, you have to give people a compelling reason to work with you. Being remembered as easy-to-work with and polite is a good start.

It cost me $5 (thanks, Moonpig).

Fast forward: I get an email back, thanking me for the card and inviting me to emcee again this year. Engagement secured. $8,500 earned.

But the money wasn't the goal. I know what it feels like for things to be quiet. I moved to New York at 30, with no contacts, no network and no bloody clue about the American way.

That feels vulnerable to admit; but I worked it all out.

Now every opportunity feels golden. I get more and more enquiries every week. I take none of it for granted. When people get in touch, I'm like hell yeah.

People trust me with their events, their panels, their audiences, their clients. It's a big responsibility, the least I can do is be grateful.

Moral of the story? Say thanks. It costs very little and it builds a lifetime of brand equity and relationships.

How I can help you: Hire me to host or moderate your event! I'm a global emcee and moderator based in New York, specialising in AI, tech and finance conferences, events, webinars & roundtables. I also auctioneer at charity auctions because I like to give back with my business as much as possible, and holding a gavel makes me feel powerful.
